Aug. 30, 2014/PRNewswire/ -- The FDA is finalizing a study to evaluate the effectiveness of Augmentin in preventing heart attack or stroke.
The study, which was sponsored by AstraZeneca, the drug manufacturer, said it was the first to evaluate the cardiovascular risks of the drug.
"It is clear that Augmentin significantly increases the risk of heart attack and stroke, particularly when taken at high doses," said Steven Nissen, MD, associate director of cardiovascular disease prevention at the Cleveland Clinic.
Nissen and his team studied 2,879 patients in 10 centers around the world. The researchers analyzed data from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute's Heart Attack, Stroke and Venous Disease (HASVd) program, which provides doctors with a database of heart-related illnesses.
They found that Augmentin was more likely to increase the risk of heart attack or stroke in patients with a history of heart disease, those taking statins, and those with previous history of heart attack or stroke.
Patients who took Augmentin had a lower rate of heart attack and stroke than those who did not take it.
The study's authors also said they expect to see further data from this new study to be published in the first issue of the American Heart Journal, the leading journal of cardiovascular science.
"This new study shows that Augmentin is associated with a higher likelihood of heart attack and stroke in patients with cardiovascular disease and other conditions," said lead author Dr. Mark S. Thompson, M. D., of the University of California, San Francisco's Division of Nephrology.
The researchers also noted that Augmentin's safety and efficacy have been studied in other types of patients with similar symptoms, and they believe the new study is particularly valuable in this area.
The study is the first to describe the cardiovascular effects of Augmentin in a patient population. This is the first study to assess the cardiovascular risks of Augmentin, a medication that belongs to a class of drugs called calcium channel blockers.
The researchers are conducting the study based on published data from patients in multiple countries and are working on an open-label, randomized, placebo-controlled study to compare Augmentin with the well-known class of calcium channel blockers, known as calcium channel blockers.
The researchers used data from the FDA-approved, widely used drug product, Vioxx, which is used to treat heart failure. The drug has been shown to be effective in preventing heart attacks and strokes in a subset of patients.
This study is one of several studies that are expected to begin in the next year to test Augmentin's cardiovascular benefits in patients with cardiovascular disease.
In addition to the cardiovascular risks associated with the drug, the FDA said it was also reviewing additional safety information and safety information in patients who are taking other medications, including certain anticoagulants.
The study was funded by AstraZeneca, the drug manufacturer, and is one of several studies that will begin in the second quarter of 2014.
The FDA approved Augmentin in 1997 for the treatment of adults with heart failure. The drug is a calcium channel blocker and belongs to the class of drugs known as calcium channel blockers.
The drug is approved by the FDA for the treatment of heart failure and has been studied in more than 20 other countries.
The drug is also approved for the treatment of adults with certain types of noncardiac conditions, such as:
The FDA also approved Augmentin for the treatment of certain types of high blood pressure, including hypertension, and high blood pressure that is not controlled by diet and exercise.
The FDA also approved Augmentin for the treatment of certain types of cardiovascular disease, including:
The drug is also approved for the treatment of high blood pressure.
The study also found that Augmentin increased the risk of a heart attack and stroke in patients with a history of heart disease.
The results, published in the journalJournal of the American College of Cardiology, show that the cardiovascular risks of the drug can be significant.
